- there are two major divisions in ISLAM(1) SUNNI who are in the majority and claim to be the ORTHODOX GROUP and (2) the SHI'A, or followers of MUHAMMAD'S son-in-law ALI, who believe that the spiritual and temporal head of ISLAM should reside with the descendants of the PROPHET. The Shi'a are the dominant group in Iran and Iraq.
